Executive Director, United Kingdom
Do you want to make a difference protecting and restoring the abundance of the oceans in the UK and the world? Come join a dedicated team of professionals who are working to protect our oceans, which play a critical role in reducing the impacts of climate change, feeding a growing global population, and supporting the livelihoods of fishers, their families, and their communities.
Founded in 2001, Oceana is the world’s largest nonprofit organization focused solely on restoring the resilience and abundance of the ocean. We achieve measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and clearly articulated goals. Our campaigns focus on getting policy changes in countries that are responsible for close to one third of the world’s wild-caught fish, including Belize, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the 27 countries in the European Union.
Oceana is seeking a leader for the United Kingdom. This is an exciting position that will provide an opportunity for the right person to make a positive and long-lasting impact on the health of the world’s oceans. For this important role, Oceana seeks a leader with creativity, ambition, demonstrated success and a well-honed instinct for achieving public policy decisions at the national level. The Executive Director must be able to articulate a vision, identify strategic opportunities, and advance them through a range of tactics. The leader for the UK must have the experience and good judgment to anticipate and target important issues, quickly formulate plans, and mobilize resources.
Building and leading a team of dedicated professionals, the successful applicant will be responsible for the development and execution of campaigns that win policy victories for the UK’s seas. The Executive Director will fill newly budgeted positions to add to our current team, building on a foundation of success in areas like habitat protection and fisheries management.
This person will be responsible for all aspects of Oceana’s work in the UK – from campaign strategy and design through implementation and will serve as an avid and persuasive advocate for Oceana’s work. Fundraising, communications, alliance-building and constructing an effective relationship with the government will be part of the Executive Director’s daily work. The incumbent will serve as a member of Oceana’s Global Executive Committee of senior leaders and will represent the work in the UK to internal and external audiences.
Strong candidates for this position will have demonstrated an ability to achieve national policy change in the UK, preferably but not necessarily in the field of conservation. Strong candidates will also have an advanced degree in a field related to policy, law or science and 10+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Due to COVID-19, the incumbent will work remotely until, in coordination with Oceana’s President, the path for staff to return to the office in London is determined.
Oceana values a diverse workforce and welcomes people different from each other in many ways, including characteristics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, and national origin. Oceana considers all qualified candidates and seeks to recruit from a diverse candidate pool.
